When we talk about safety in the context of the regulation of veterinary medicines we mean safety to:

  • the operator (the user of the medicine) and people in contact with the medicine
  • the target animal (the patient)
  • in-contact animals – those in contact with the patient
  • the environment
  • the public via the food chain – people who might consume residues of the medicine in food

When any qualified person supplies a POM-V, POM-VPS or NFA-VPS medicine they have an obligation under the Veterinary Medicines Regulations to:

  1. Supply the minimum quantity.
  2. Provide advice on safety.

To use medicines safely, animal keepers such as farmers need to understand the basic principles of safe use and storage of veterinary medicines. “Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines” is a short, online course that Vetpol developed with LANTRA at LANTRA’s request in order that LANTRA could host an introductory course on its own Learning Management System. The SUVM course is priced at £92 and leads to a certificate provided by LANTRA. Vetpol provided the written content for the course to LANTRA, but the course is entirely delivered through LANTRA via its Learning and Management System with graphics created by LANTRA.

As this e-learning course consists solely of online content comprised of mostly words and graphics, LANTRA applies the zero-VAT rating to this course, relying on VAT Act 1994, Schedule 8, Group 3, Item 1. Although LANTRA controls all the settings for this course, including access to the course, LANTRA uses a Vetpol Paypal account to charge customers. Vetpol has never had any control over any of the settings, including no control over any of pricing settings. Therefore, if you purchase this course you will not receive a VAT receipt as VAT will not have been charged by LANTRA. The notification of the purchase that you receive from Paypal will be your official receipt of purchase.

If you have any difficulty accessing the Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines Course on the LANTRA website you need to contact lantraawards@lantra.co.uk as the course is delivered through LANTRA and Vetpol has no control over any of the access settings.

Vetpol SQP training is hosted on the Vetpol learning management system and so unlike this introductory course on the safe use of veterinary medicines, Vetpol controls access to Vetpol SQP training.

Although entirely delivered online by LANTRA, the SUVM course is presented in an animated, interactive format. This course will provide you with a basic understanding of The Animal Welfare Act 2006, the basics of disease in animals and how to store and use medicines safely and effectively.

This course is a good starter for anyone considering going on a career working with animals and veterinary medicines, including taking the next step to become a qualified SQP.
